Fall Flora

The theme, “Fall Flora,” on one level points us to the lovely reds, golds, and browns of the autumn leaves around us. There is a richness in the decline of summer’s vigor! Some of the paintings celebrate this beauty. On another level, autumn reveals the power of some plants, and people, to gracefully thrive and to endure the changes that time brings into their lives. It is also a time to celebrate seasons of life when we retire to a more reflective posture and relish our relationships and appreciate all we have been given.

We just hop int he car and go for a drive, traveling on 3 digit highways, to Williamsburg, Smithfield or other parts west of here. In the piece I wanted to capture the colors of fall. I mixed various watercolors on a piece of plexiglass. I laid the paper on the plexiglass to see what would result. After it was dry, I saw this forest of fall colors. I added black ink for trunks and branches. I used Dragon Cloud paper, which has become a rice paper favorite of mine. you an see the water resistance in places where the color was not absorbed, and you can also see the flecks of fiber in the rice paper.”

This year, the pumpkin brings to me memories of visiting pumpkin patches with my twins when they were 1, 2, 3, and older, until they were too big to let me take them.
